Some of our offerings (like “Hey Everybody: Let’s Make a Porno” and “F*CKLAB”) share AORTA’s fine-tuned creative process with audiences in an intimate, immersive and participatory setting. Others (like talks, presentations, and speaking engagements that we’ve participated in) allow us the opportunity to dive into the fascinating and multi-layered insights to be found in discussing the adult industry, indie porn, ethical porn production, and more!

Hey Everybody: Let’s Make a Porno!

A participatory workshop + performance + lecture + shoot experience

After a decade of award-winning filmmaking, trans/queer porn studio AORTA films opens their ethical porn practice–and innovative praxis–to the public as an immersive, participatory, educational art experience.

In “Hey Everybody, Let’s Make a Porno!” or (“HELMAP” for short) civilian audience members participate in a full-day event resulting in the creation of an original pornographic film. With a front row seat to AORTA’s creative process, audience members get to try out embodying consent, grasping the intricacies of the adult industry, participating in scene negotiations, joining the conversation about what porn they want to see in the world, and even have the option to appear on screen. As an immersive performance–part lecture-demonstration, part workshop, and part live filming–AORTA’s creative director Mahx Capacity and Co-Producer Papi Femme enlist the audience as creative collaborators, leading them through the ethical pornmaking process as each person is asked to navigate their own politics, desires, and paths through an exciting creative experience usually off-limits to those outside the Adult Industry. As pornography falls increasingly under attack, HELMAP champions the production of erotic content as a vital practice spanning art-making, political praxis, resistance journalism, and expression of identity.

Created as an iterative, sustainable platform, HELMAP offers a model for AORTA films to partner with curators, festivals, brands and organizations who value explicit art to deepen public understanding of a marginalized form. Each HELMAP produces a short pornographic film which is shared first with the makers–all attendees and collaborators–and then given to the partnering entity for its first premiere. From there, AORTA films acts as the distributor of the work, sending it across the world to indie, queer, and erotic film festivals as well as offering it to members via AORTA’s website. Beyond the creation of inventive new works of pornography, HELMAP proposes a sustainable model for the indie porn ecology’s growth by providing hands-on education about the industry, demystifying a marginalized labor practice, and championing erotic content as the frontline of freedom of speech, LGBTQAI+ rights, and bodily autonomy.

F*CKLAB

AORTA films’ F*CKLAB is for kinksters, movers, sex workers, and porn performers. It offers participants a chance to get experimental with their accumulated body knowledge, build new skill sets, and develop a shared practice around explicit embodiment.

What does it mean to build a rehearsal practice for pornography? What does an enthusiastically consensual practice look like when sexually explicit bodies, states, and actions are centered? How can kink dynamics, orgasm, gender, identity, eroticism, and sex acts be used as choreographic and improvisational tools. Somewhere between a rehearsal, a research group, and a play party, F*CKLAB investigates the negotiation of pornographic embodiment as an anti-oppressive, feminist, and trans-inclusive practice rooted in femme care-taking and risk.
